The Role of Entrepreneurship in Rural Agribusiness Development: A Theoretical Framework
Main Article Content
Abstract
Entrepreneurship has become an increasingly important mechanism for promoting rural agribusiness development by connecting agricultural production with innovation, market opportunities, employment generation and value creation. Rural entrepreneurship extends beyond the establishment of individual enterprises and involves the transformation of agricultural resources, local knowledge, technologies and market opportunities into economically viable activities. This conceptual paper develops a theoretical framework explaining how entrepreneurship contributes to rural agribusiness development through innovation, opportunity recognition, resource mobilization, market participation, digitalization, institutional support and value-chain integration. Drawing on the literature provided for the study, the paper examines the relationships between entrepreneurial orientation and rural economic development while recognizing the structural constraints faced by rural entrepreneurs, including limited finance, infrastructure, technological capabilities, market access and institutional support. The paper proposes that entrepreneurial capabilities operate as an important mechanism through which agricultural resources can be converted into economic and social value. An numerical framework is developed to demonstrate potential relationships between entrepreneurial capability, institutional support, innovation and rural agribusiness performance. The study contributes theoretically by integrating entrepreneurship, agricultural development and rural transformation perspectives into a unified conceptual framework. It argues that strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems can support rural employment, diversification, innovation, farmer participation and sustainable agribusiness development.
