Agricultural Supply Chains and Food Security: A Conceptual Perspective

Abstract

Agricultural supply chains play a fundamental role in determining the availability, accessibility, affordability and stability of food. Increasing climate variability, market volatility, geopolitical disruptions, resource constraints, technological transformation and changing consumption patterns have created significant challenges for the reliability and resilience of agricultural supply chains. This conceptual paper develops an integrated theoretical perspective on the relationship between agricultural supply chains and food security by synthesizing literature on supply-chain management, agricultural production, sustainability, digital transformation, market access and resilience. The paper conceptualizes food security as an outcome influenced by the efficiency, resilience, inclusiveness, sustainability and coordination of agricultural supply chains. It argues that supply-chain performance affects food security through interconnected mechanisms involving production capacity, transportation, storage, market access, price stability, information availability and distribution. The framework further emphasizes the role of digital technologies, institutional coordination, circular economy practices and stakeholder collaboration in strengthening agricultural supply chains. An  numerical framework is developed to demonstrate how supply-chain efficiency, resilience and food-security dimensions can be conceptually evaluated. The paper contributes to theory development by integrating supply-chain and food-security perspectives into a unified conceptual framework and provides a foundation for future empirical research on resilient, inclusive and sustainable agricultural supply chains.
