Economics and Kathak: A Literature Review of the Economic, Sociocultural, and Psychological Impact of Kathak Dance

Abstract

Kathak, one of India's eight recognized classical dance traditions, has evolved from a devotional storytelling practice into a globally recognized performing art form. While substantial scholarship has explored its historical development, aesthetic principles, and cultural significance, comparatively limited attention has been paid to its broader economic, sociocultural, and psychological contributions. This literature review examines the multidimensional impact of Kathak on society and on the well-being of its practitioners. Drawing upon interdisciplinary literature from cultural studies, economics, psychology, and performance studies, the paper investigates how Kathak functions not only as an artistic expression but also as an economic ecosystem generating employment, entrepreneurship, and cultural tourism opportunities. Furthermore, the study analyzes Kathak's role in preserving cultural heritage, fostering social cohesion, promoting intercultural dialogue, and sustaining India's intangible cultural traditions. The review also explores the therapeutic and psychological dimensions of Kathak, highlighting its contribution to emotional regulation, resilience, self-development, and overall mental well-being. The findings suggest that Kathak extends beyond its artistic value to serve as a vehicle for economic empowerment, cultural continuity, and holistic human development. The paper concludes that strategic investment in Kathak through educational programs, cultural policies, and institutional support can contribute significantly to sustainable cultural development and societal well-being.
