Abstract
Micro-level industries make up an essential part of the industrial structure in India and help with the creation of jobs, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic development. Still, the contribution of the micro-level industries becomes hidden within the aggregate statistics for the MSMEs in India, and information about the role played by these industries in employment, financing, digitalization, rural development, women entrepreneurship, and enterprise resilience becomes fragmentary. This paper looks into the role played by the micro-level industries in the economic development of India in 2021-2025 with a special focus on employment creation and entrepreneurship development. The research methodology adopted in the paper is descriptive and analytical and includes only the secondary data collected from Government of India sources, Ministry of MSME sources, and relevant literature. Percentage analysis, growth rate analysis, trend analysis, comparative analysis, and thematic synthesis have been used. According to the results, micro enterprises are the major component of the ecosystem of the registered MSMEs in India, and micro enterprise schemes supported by the government play a key role in creating jobs, participating in entrepreneurship, rural livelihoods, and economic activity of women. While on the other hand, variations in the nature of definitions, scope of registration, geographical settings, and availability of data impede direct comparison in a longitudinal perspective as well as correlation and regression analyses. From the overall findings of this study, the importance of micro-industries in the development process in India can be noted especially in terms of employment creation and entrepreneurship. This implies the need for greater coordination in supporting them.
