Abstract

The expansion of online payment systems has revolutionized the way people engage in monetary transactions. While these platforms may provide increased convenience and speed in processing, it can also diminish the consciousness of users to small and recurrent expenditure. The present study aims to explore the concept of micro-loss neglect in digital spending, with a limited focus of low value payments and subscription payments. The primary data were gathered in the form of a questionnaire comprising of structured questions which are targeted to prompt the respondent to provide information on the usage of the services related to digital payments, the knowledge on small charges, the attitude on the small receivables, the subscription behavior and keeping an eye on the expenses. The resultant dataset was interpreted using the descriptive statistical measures and cross tabulation techniques. Findings reveal that a large percentage of individuals actively utilize online payment methods, thereby increasing the exposure to repeat low value transactions. Although most of the users acknowledge the importance of small digital spending and agree on recurrent small payments affecting their monthly budgets, the awareness of charges in the ₹10–₹50 category is fluctuating. This inconsistency highlights a strong difference between the financial perception and specific spending attention. In addition, it suggests that digital services offered through subscriptions develop a passive consumption mindset because many respondents indicated that they used paid subscriptions infrequently despite making automatic payments regularly. The current research, however, does not claim digital payments, as such, lead to excessive spending. Variables such as limited budgeting practices, poor transaction tracking and lifestyle patterns also have an effect on expenditure behavior. Due to the dependency on the perception-based responses and limited sample, the obtained findings should be interpreted with caution. Altogether, the paper does find that, with the help of digital payment systems, a moderate level of micro-loss disregard is enabled, which in turn shows the need to increase spending awareness, strong expense-tracking tools and financial literacy to reduce unnecessary digital spending.
